It is important to note that Shivaji was not the "CHHATRIYA" by cast but he belongs to OBC. However he was the greatest protector of Cow and Brahmin, therefore the Brahmins insisted him to accept the kingship. On insistance of the brahmins Shivaji performed a YAGYA through the Brahmins of KASHI and there after accept the post of CHHATARPATI like a king and constructed a fort to run the administration. This fort is called as Raigarh fort. As a matter of fact Raigarh was capital of Chhatarpati Shivaji.

There is an interesting explanation for why there is such strong anti minority sentiment in Maharashtra and Gujarat: they were never fully defeated or fully victorious against the Mughals of Delhi who used to invade them time and again. As a result the local populations are still trying to fight off the Mughals, but the problem is that there are no Mughals now, so the closest approximation is used as substitute target.
