Sultan Batteri (Battery) (Mangaluru)

India / Karnataka / Mangaluru / sultan battery road
 monument, place with historical importance

This is a gun emplacement built by Tipu Sulthan, the 'Tiger of Mysore' to guard the Gurpur River estuary. Unfortunately, the Archaeological Survey of India has made a mess of the restoration . Still worth seeing, though, as it is one of the few remnants of the conflicts that raged in this area between the British, the Portuguese and the Indians, which culminated in the signing of the Treaty of Mangalore between the British and Tippu.

  • Originally “Sultan Battery” this is a watchtower attributed to Tipu Sultan. Located 2kms west of Lady-Hill and built on the eastern bank of the Gurpur river, it is virtually the only vestige the city was once provided. Tipu Sulthan and Hider Ali protected Mangalore fiercely form British annexation for several years. Raiders form the sea would be fodder for the guns across the river Netravati and would be forced to move northwards along the Gurpur River. The gradual turn near Bockapatna was a perfect target for the multiple cannons placed on the tower at Batheri. It is sad that this tower built about 225 years ago with laterite and having withstood the fury of nature and the British, had to succumb to the assault of contractor who plastered it with cement as a conservation exercise. Take the ferry across the river for a fun experience and to reach a virgin beach without any hawkers. Location: Drive westwards for 1.5kms form Lady Hill Circle near Mangala Stadium
