The aluminium sculpture by landscape designer and artist Charles Jencks is one of a number across the world which commemorate the discovery of DNA by Professor James D. Watson when he was a graduate student in Clare College together with fellow student Francis Crick made the 1953 breakthrough which was to unlock the key of life for which they share the Nobel prize with Maurice Wilkins for this discovery. Professor Watson donated sculpture to Clare college.
