St. Alphonsus Catholic Church (Windsor, Ontario)

Canada / Ontario / Windsor / Windsor, Ontario / Park Street East, 85

Erected in 1873, in the Medieval Revival style, the structure is the second church erected on the site. A wooden church building was constructed in 1857 to serve the 2,000 people of Windsor (2/3 rds of whom were Catholics) and relieve them from having to make the two mile trip to Assumption Church in Sandwich to worship.

The church was designed by Turner and remained without a steeple until 1884. The building stood 204 feet high from ground level to the top of the steeple until 1919 when the steeple was blown down in a windstorm.
