In the heart of the Eastern Rhodopes, 60 km east of Kardzhali and the same distance southeast of Haskovo, between the Studen Kladenets and Ivaylovgrad reservoirs, the Arda River forms a fabulous canyon, cutting through a prehistoric two-crater volcano. The former mining town of Madzharovo is located in the town and is visited annually by hundreds of nature lovers from all over Europe, who have come to experience the unique nature of the Eastern Rhodopes.
4 protected areas have been created within the volcanic crater. The natural landmark Kovan Kaya encompasses majestic rock complexes, screes, open terrains located on the northern bank of the Arda River. It has been declared a protected area in order to protect rare and endangered bird species.
Of the species included in the Red Book of Bulgaria, the Griffon vulture and the Egyptian vulture, unique for the whole of Bulgaria and Europe, nest in the rocky volcanic niches. You can also see the black vulture or also called cartel. The wingspan of these colossi at altitudes is about three meters and soaring above the volcano, they are an indescribable sight, which explains the reason for the great tourist interest. Apart from vultures, other endangered and rare species can be observed here, such as the black stork, the white-tailed buzzard, the blue and variegated rock thrush and many other interesting bird species.
