The Air Terminal was built to be the main railroad station for the World Cup soccer championship of ITALIA '90 but it was never used.

After the world cup it was quickly abandoned and was left in a neglected state until 2012 when it reopened as EATALY (italian food court with restaurants and shops) and as the main station of NTV Italo private trains.
