 power station, coal-fired

Operator: South Carolina Power Services Authority
Sanatee Cooper Inc.

Located in Conway, its two coal-fired units producing 170 MWs began commercial operation in 1966.Although operated and maintained by Santee Cooper,Grainger is leased to Santee Cooper by Central Electric Power Cooperative, located in Columbia. Grainger represents Santee Cooper’s close relationship with the state’s electric cooperatives that have Santee Cooper as the primary source of power.

The station is named for the late Dolphus M. Grainger, a prominent Horry Countian active in rural electrification. Each stack at Grainger is 300 feet tall — as tall as a football field is long! Grainger produces more than 170 megawatts of electricity per hour —more than enough to light up almost every household in the Grand Strand!

The Grainger Generating Station is unique in that while it is operated by Santee Cooper, it is owned by Central Electric Power Cooperative. Columbia-based Central is Santee Cooper's largest wholesale customer, sells power generated by Santee Cooper to the state's 20 electric co-ops in all 46 counties. When Santee Cooper makes the final payment on Grainger early in the next decade, it will belong to Santee Cooper.
