Founded by the US LifeSaving Service in 1878, Station Ludington has been in operation on this spot ever since, and presently secures an area of responsibility from Big Sable Point to Stoney Lake for an overall operational area of approximately 35 nautical miles of coastline and encompassing 1,050 square miles of total coast and open water area.

Operating as part of the US Coast Guards 9th District, Sector Lake Michigan, Station Ludington's complement of 15 active duty, 4 reserve, 20+ auxiliary members handles approximately 100 Search and Rescue cases per year and over 150 boardings.
