The Esselworld Amusement Park is a very extensive property belonging to the Essel Group of Companies owned by the Ruia family. The site is located on the eastern fringes of the Gorai island, on what used to be inter-tidal wetlands, reclaimed by destroying mangroves. Besides the mangroves, however, the land belonged to, and were used by the native Norteiros or East Indians for fishing and other activities in obtaining their livelihood. The land was taken over illegally without providing any kind of compensation, effectively stolen, from its owners, by the Marathi colonial "Maharashtra" government and provided to the Ruias (www.east-indians.com/sezgorai.htm). This act was part of the plan and program of genocide against the native Konkani peoples of the Konkan by the Marathi colonists and their allies, such as the Ruias; and the robbery of the land included acts of terrorism against the resisting native Norteiros, acts which are continuing even till today by the Ruias. The Ruias have now asked the Maharashtra government to confiscate and hand over the entire Dharavi Island to them for a massive extension of Esselworld as the "Esselworld Special Entertainment Zone", reducing the native, predominantly Christian Norteiro or East Indian inhabitants to homeless beggars on Bombay's streets. In response to opposition to this naked landgrab, the government has begun a drive to demolish "illegal" home constructions or extensions, even as it turns a blind eye to illegal changes in Esselworld. The Government's terrorist activities against the Goraians has resulted in riots, but the Marathi colonists are determined to continue with their program of genocide.
Part of the Esselworld layout is a huge "Buddhist" temple built by New Agers (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Pagoda): The temple's builders, the Goenkas, are not themselves Buddhists, but are, like the Ruias, Hindus and Jain merchant-capitalists from Gujarat or Marwar. Nor are there are Buddhists on Gorai Island. Moreover, the Ambedkarite Neo-Buddhist community in Bombay, suppressed by the Casteist Marathi, have not been involved in the construction of this temple. The real purpose of the enormous temple is to serve as a memorial and showcase of proud, triumphant Gujarati-Marathi colonialism and genocide in the Konkan.
