SAFARI PARK The 300 –acre Safari Park which has now been designated as a family park is situated on main University Road on the confluence of Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Gulistan-e-Jauhar. It is easily approachable from many parts of the city whose population is now nearly half that of Canada. When Pakistan appeared on the map of the world, Karachi became its capital. The Zoo in the city established by the British in 1872, spread upon 33 acres of land. It was big enough for the then population of the city. With the influx of refugees from all parts of India and in later years people from the upcountry, a need was felt for a bigger zoological gardens. But the main problem was the acquisition of land. In this connection, services of Dr. S.M.H Rizvi, renowned eye surgeon and a hunter-turned-conservationist, were acquired as he had connections with the authorities that mattered. The doctor had family relations with the then Governor of West Pakistan, Lt. General Attiqur Rahman. Dr. Rizvi succeeded in persuading the Governor to have a briefing on the necessity of a bigger place for the animals for the enjoyment of the citizens of Karachi. One fine morning the Governor came to the Karachi Zoo where Dr. A.A. Quraishy gave a briefing on the proposed zoological gardens which impressed him. The Governor immediately ordered the officials present there to find a suitable place. A site measuring 407 acres in the barren rocky tract on main University road was selected. On his next visit to Karachi on 22nd June 1970, Lt. General Attiqur Rahman laid the foundation stone of the present Safari Park. The park has now become the major attraction for the citizens of this metropolis particularly for children. The land is typical chinkara country ---arid, full of small stones and crisscrossed by dry ravines. It is the very kind of land which chinkara love and explains why they have flourished here. The Safari Park is divided into two parts--- the front Park area and the Safari area. The Park area is spread mostly upon land that is flat. Two ridges in the Park area are its dominant feature. The Safari area is almost rocky except for a small stretch which is sandy where “nilgais” are most often seen. A Unique Fact The land on which Safari Park is situated was lived in 5,000 years ago by the Phoenicians. The fact that they lived here was proved conclusively when their graves were identified by the renowned archaeologist Dr. S.M Ashfaq. The fruit of an archeological expedition organized by Mr. Azmat Ansari was the discovery of a 5,000 year old pitcher which was on display in the National Museum Karachi for sometime. The find was made less than a mile from the Safari Park. The entire land on which Safari Park is situated millions of years ago was under the now extinet Tethyes Sea.
