The hamlet Hallaar was under the Ancien Regime of one of seven "Heertgangen".
It became an independent municipality in 1876.
It celebrated its 100 year anniversary just before the merger with Heist-op-den-Berg in 1976.
On August 21, 1907, a tornado was observed in Hallaar.
