French President Georges Pompidou sponsored the construction of this structure, in 1971, via an international competition won by the architects Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers. The Centre was opened 1977. It houses the Musée National d'Art Moderne (MNAM), the Bibliothèque Publique d'Information (BPI), a café, a restaurant, shops, expositions and many other activities. The square to the west of the structure has become one of the most popular gathering points in Paris, peopled every day with mimes, buskers, jugglers, and crowds of tourists.
