During the spring of 1861, Confederate forces advanced to this point following the Union debacle at Bull Run (1st Manassas) and built fieldworks here.

During the summer months, a Confederate military band stationed here had evening music contests with their Union counterparts at nearby Fort Ward in Alexandria.

The earthworks were quickly abandoned when the Army of the Potomac regained its strength, but they were the closest Confederate fortifications ever got to Washington, DC during the Civil War.

A small park exists at the core of what was the old Munson family estate.

  • They could have been the 2nd force to burn the capitol or 'presidential palace'. Could you be a little more specific about the terrain, etc.?
