The fort was originally Byzantine, built by the Byzantine emperor Nicephorus II about 959 years later moved to the Arabs, and then - to the Seljuk Turks.
In 1097 it was taken by the crusaders, who kept it until 1149, except for a short time in 1098, when it was conquered by the Arabs.
The fortress was taken by Nur al-Din in 1149, then was returned back by the Crusaders in 1158 and again taken by Nur al-Din in 1164.
Remnants of the fortress date back to the war between the Muslims and the Crusaders between 1164 and 1268.
During the Mongol invasion in the 13th century, much of the city of Harem was destroyed, including the castle.
