Park (Buftea)

Romania / Ilfov / Buftea / Stirbey Voda

Although the park was arranged around 1864 by Alexandru Ştirbey, immediately after the construction of the palace, the first reported intervention belongs to the great magistrate Barbu C. Ştirbey, who built a fountain in a rather classic architectural style – which no longer exists.

The park presents the specific elements of a romantic park, such as free organization, following the natural elements, although it is assumed that its appearance was designed by landscape specialists. The alleys follow the elongated shape of the park, and the planting was ordered so as to preserve its natural diversity; an essential contribution to the landscape is made by the central element (around which all the others are organized) - the inner lake.

The principal access way was, from the very beginning, in front of the intersection of the two main roads from that area. The main range stars from the entrance, goes to the palace and continues describing a big loop, crossing all the important areas of the park.

The vegetation is extremely diverse and, apart from trees planted more recently, during successive planning stages, there are many secular trees, aging up to approximately 400 years.

The park used to have the roll of residence and place of leisure for the Ştirbey family and their guests. The wish of practicing equestrian sports leaded to fitting out, on the lake bank, a special 700 meters long alley for riding. The long and sinuous alleys of the park may serve the same purpose as well.

The park is open for visits with or without a professional guide.
