Famous tunnel and photography location (east portal) on the former Boston and Albany Main Line (now CSX Boston Line).

Roughly cut from the natural rock, this twin bore tunnel was reduced to a single track in the late 80's.

This is the only tunnel on the line and occurs at the high point of the Berkshire mountains.

  • This is indeed the tunnel that's been labeled the State Line Tunnel for many years. HOWEVER if you click on the "-" tag 4 times to increase the map's field of view, note that the state line (at the crest of the Berkshires) runs about 2 miles east of the tunnel!! This tunnel is well withing the state of NY (town of Canaan). Amazing how this name and description has been repeated for so many years.
  • Ugh yeah like it doesn't have to be ON the state line to be called "State Line tunnel"...it can be NEAR it and still have the name...it IS JUST a name after all!
  • Yes, Dude, you're right, it's just a name. And it is near the state line, and it might be hard to come up with a better name for the location. Problem is: because of its name people are misled and in many places (on websites and in books) we're told that it's on the border (some even say that trains enter tunnel in NY and emerge in Mass.) and also that it's at the high point of the Berkshire Mountains (it's not). And if they get out and look for the tunnel at the state line, they're not going to find it.
  • Probably what the railroad called it so the name sticks.
