Lake Hodges Pedestrian & Bicyclist Bridge (San Diego, California)

USA / California / Escondido / San Diego, California

Officially known as the David Kreitzer Lake Hodges Bicycle Pedestrian Bridge, the span is an alternate route for cyclists who used to brave the I-15 bridge over Lake Hodges. The south entrance to the bridge is just off Pomerado Road, and a mile-long paved path connects the bride's north end with Sunset Drive.
The bridge also eliminates a 10-mile detour hikers had to take to connect trails to the north of the lake with trails to the south.
Named after Rancho Bernardo resident David Kreitzer, a former San Diego County Planning Commission chairman and longtime supporter of the San Dieguito River Park, the 990-foot bridge was built with a stress-ribbon design that incorporates metal cables stretched end to end. With cables supporting the structure at both ends, the bridge is thinner and needs fewer columns than conventional bridges its size, according to its designers.
