Eight 12" mortars were mounted here from 1902 to 1921. Four of the original mortars remain in place.
Battery Laidley represents the largest remaining collection of 12-inch mortars in the United States. the only place in the world with more is the island of Corregidor in the Phillipines.
Battery Laidley was named on May 15, 1903 in honor of Colonel Theodore T.S. Laidley, Ordnance Department, U.S. Army, who rendered conspicuous service in the war with Mexico and the Civil war, and who died April 4, 1886, at Palatka, Florida.
