One of the oldest natural oak forests within the Dobrogea region, "Furnica" forest is one of the most enigmatic places left in the area, basically due to its scarce fauna, varicolored history and peculiar myths haunting the place. It boosts with deer, wild boars, lots of birds and plenty of fauna and flora. If visiting, please keep it clean and undisturbed.
THE MYTH OF 'FURNICA' FOREST:
------------------------------------------------
Once upon a time, there was a beautiful Romanian girl named Furnica, whose desire was to roam the forest day and night. Because God didn't give her the gift of having children, she resigned herself to plant young trees. One day, the legend says, she was picking wild berries in the young forest's wilderness, when Tartar invaders attacked her, raping and killing her afterwards. Story tells us that all the Tartar base settled in the forest was later ravished by a terrifying storm, where mud, branches and stones turned the sinners into raw meat and covered them deeply. Water came over, as a river of blood carved into the hills the snake-shaped gorges of today. In her memory, people established a nearby hamlet called Furnica, situated close to the springs they named "Sources of Youth&Beauty", to which they also attribute curing abilities in people cursed by the evil eye. The mystery of the unmarried dead girl walking through the forest by night is still frightening those daring enough to camp there by night. It is said that sometimes scary shrills are to be heard into the mournful darkness, and the spook of a woman comes so close to a man, as to stare directly into his eyes. Scaring the heck out of him, she turns him stiffly speechless at once. Young girls have also been traumatized and condamned to blindness by that bride-looking spook To stay clear of that, pretend you see or hear nothing and firmly close your eyes and ears, avoiding her glance and whispers, or else you might end possessed by the girl's soul. Moreover, villagers claim they have encountered terrifying zombie-like creatures walking the land of the forest, when the light begins to change and night takes over the day. Therefore, be it either myth or reality, you should protect yourself when going out there, especially by night..
