Wild polo is beeing played here in mid June every year between Chitral and Gilgit.
It is called Shandoor Festival. The Worlds Highest pologround located at 12,000ft.Every year in the month of June, Chitral and Gilgit Polo Teams play a very exciting tournament on this ground. I visited three time this year for the coverage of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and President Perviz Musharaf.
This area weather is very harsh-in day time sun shine burns skin particularly tip of nose, ears and cheeks. Time time one need two blankets to warm body. Water is hard and it takes hours to cook food. If once you rub soap on hand or face....it takes time to remove. I heard only single bird sound in these lofty and barren mountains. There is one big and two small lakes. Ground is very dusty and when Jeep passes, it rises the dust. Those who are heart patients, are advised not to travel there as lack of Oxegen can trouble such people.
When I traveled this are last time in 1996, it was jeep-able track and took seven hours to reach Shindor. On the way there is no hotle or resturant so better to take ready-made food or take cooking tools and food to arrange by your self.
From Chitral to Giglgit, the track is best foot-tracking as the area is completely peaceful for tourist either Pakistani or Foreign. You can stay at any local residence and pay some money. In this area a local alchohal call `Toot Ka Pani` is available.
