SMS Magdeburg Sinking Site

Estonia / Laane / Nova /
First World War 1914-1918, shipwreck, cruiser

This is the approximate sinking location of the SMS Magdeburg after running hard aground on 26 August 1914 just a few hundred yards from the Odensholm Light. This sinking is significant because from the wreckage and the bottom of the sea the Russians were able to recover German codebooks and encypherment keys. These were turned over to the British for their use in code breaking activities and eventually led to the Allies being able to read Germany's Naval message traffic.
