Also known as Mount McKinley it is the highest point in North America according to the information of 1952 at 20,320 feet (6,194 m). Measured from base to peak, it is also the largest of any mountain entirely above sea level at some 18,000 feet.

On Monday, 08/31/2015 Barack Obama embarked on a trip to Alaska and returned the highest mountain in North America its old name. Mount McKinley is again Denali. In the language of the Athabaskan means "the Great". William McKinley was the 25th president in the history of the United States. A prospector had the mountain in 1896 named after the politician in order to support his bid for the presidency.

  • The proper name of the mountain is "Denali" It's not just "Natives" that call it that.
  • everybody in Alaska calls it Denali, not just natives.
  • Actually, Mt. Mckinley was named after President McKinley, the 25th president of the United States by whites years ago. Before that the Alaskan natives named it "Denali" which means "The Great One". Several years ago it was determined that the whites had insensitively renamed it without thinking and so the name was changed back to it's previous name. It is both called Denali and Mt. McKinley, however the more politically correct name is "Denali".
