Girdwood is an unincorporated community within the Municipality of Anchorage, Alaska. Originally settled during the 1890's gold rush era as a result of placer mining in area creeks, modern Girdwood developed as a seasonal resort community around the Alyeska Ski resort. The permanent resident population was 236 in 2006, with a substantially larger seasonal non-resident population.

Girdwood moved 2.5 miles up the valley after the devastating Good Friday Earthquake of 1964, when the land under the original townsite subsided into Turnagain Arm, putting much of the town below high tide. The land has not all since been reclaimed, as one can still see 'drowned' cabins in the marshy areas where the city formerly extended.
