abandoned / shut down, power station

The Richard L Hearn Generating Station is a now-closed coal-fired power plant located near downtown Toronto. The RL Hearn station was Canada's first 100 MW steam turbo-generator set. It was commissioned in 1951. This plant was phased out of operation in July 1983, both due to concerns about air pollution in Toronto and abundant energy supply in the province.
Due to increased power needs in the city, combined with a lack of power lines leading into the downtown core, a new "peak demand" gas-fired power plant is currently planned to be built on the lands just to the northeast of the Hearn, in what is now an empty field. The new Portlands Energy Centre is expected to deliver between 500 to 600 megawatts of power to downtown Toronto.
