Established in 1957 atop a 2,300ft high bluff on Cape Dyer, the DYE-MAIN station was the control and command hub for the DYE Sector of DEW Line stations that extended Eastward into Greenland and Iceland as well as a major communications station for Westward DEW stations. Separated into two different camps linked by an eight-mile winding road, the "Upper" site was frequently cut off from land-based resupply from the "Lower" site for much of the winter. During the Summer months, the airfield and port facilities of the Lower site were extensively used to resupply both DYE-MAIN but as a staging point for supplies and crew bound for other DEW Line stations.

Idled by the termination of DEW Line operations in 1989, DYE-MAIN became the only station in its sector to be repurposed as part of the North Warning System and today operates as a staffed Long Range NWS Radar site and is equipped with AN/FPS-117 radar systems.
