The Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel is the first casino in Western New York and the largest hotel in New York State outside of Manhattan. The casino floor alone covers an area of 147,000 sq ft (13,700 m2) with 99 gaming tables and 4,200 slot machines. Originally, it was the "Niagara Falls Convention and Civic Center", a 1973 building built during a disastrous urban renewal project that destroyed Falls Street. It closed in 2002 and was renovated into the casino-hotel, a somewhat controversial move, as the airy, bright convention center was turned into a dark and smoky casino.
