As of the census of 2000, the Town of Niagara had a population of 8,378. The town is named for the Niagara River, which it once bordered until the incorporation of the City of Niagara Falls in 1892. The town is the northeastern neighbor of the City of Niagara Falls, which adjoins the river and the famed Niagara Falls, which have been a tourist destination for centuries. The town is famous for its shopping centers, such as the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls, which is frequented by Canadian shoppers.
The Town of Niagara was founded in 1812 as Fort Schlosser, named for a former British fort on the Niagara River. Between 1892 and 1927, parts of the town were annexed by the newly created City of Niagara Falls. Its borders have remained the same since 1927.
