The history of the church began when some early assembly missionaries from Plymouth, England, arrived in Kuala Lumpur in 1891 and Bluff Road Gospel Hall was built in 1897. As the number of churchgoer grows, a new Gospel Hall was built at Venning Road in 1922. However, many missionaries suffered imprisonment at the hands of the Japanese invaders during the Second World War. The church moved to its current location in 1962 when the Gospel Hall at Venning Road was gazette by the government as the place to build the National Mosque, and a site at Imbi Road adjacent to the Bintang Palace nightclub was offered in its place.
The English-speaking assembly currently consists of over 250 members. Uniquely, Imbi chapel is also a community chapel, meaning anyone can use the place. The movement believes and follows everything in the Christian bible. They do not believe in the use of symbols like cross or angels in typical churches, only the Holy Communion. The chapel did not have air-conditioning till only recently for they want the congregation to be able to worship and praise anywhere. The chapel can be used one day for a wedding, the next day for a funeral. However, due to its location adjacent to a nightclub, visitor may find the environment to be noisy and less peaceful. Nevertheless, Jalan Imbi Chapel is one of the oldest brethren churches in Malaysia.
