The museum was set up in 1938 as the Provincial Museum of Odisha in Cuttack and later shifted to Bhubaneswar in 1947-48. Over 500 visitors come to the museum in summer every day, but during other seasons the footfall goes up to about 2,500 per day.The State Museum is going to get a makeover soon with five new galleries and technology-enabled facilities. The proposed galleries include mining and jewellery, Odisha through the ages, human evolution, freedom fighters and the 'pattachitra' gallery.
The museum will celebrate its foundation day on Tuesday. "Upgrading the facilities at the museum were due for a long time. We have been trying to make the museum more interesting and informative and so we are tying up with other institutes to attract more visitors and involve them in the process of conservation,
