Formerly the Loews Commodore, the Fillmore East was a live music venue which gained its fame from 1968-1971 when acts such as The Grateful Dead, The Who, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Mott The Hoople, and Santana played to adoring fans. Dozens of acts recorded live albums here, including The Allman Brothers Band.

In 1971, promoter Bill Graham closed the doors to protest the rising power of rock and roll stardom. Today, the building is an Emigrant savings bank branch and is owned by NYU.

  • Uhm, Fillmore East was at least equally matched in statue by it's forerunner, Fillmore West, in San Francisco, Bill Grahams home town. The name Fillmore comes from the Fillmore district in San Francisco, where the original Fillmore theater was located. 5 of the bands mentioned above hailed from the West coast.
