One of a series of roadside pavilions erected by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the 1930s relating the events during the Atlanta Campaign of 1864. The markers at this particular site describe the so-called "Affair at Cassville" where Joseph Johnston (CS) briefly turned to give battle to William T. Sherman's (US) advancing army, May 19-20, 1864. Though holding a very strong position on a ridge just east of Cassville, Johnston allowed himself to be talked out of giving battle by two of his corps commanders.

The pavilion here is in rather dilapidated state. The others are at Dalton, Ringgold, Resaca, New Hope, Peachtree Creek, and Ezra Church (the latter two both in the city of Atlanta).
