Roman / Bycantine Fort

Egypt / al-Bahhr-al-Ahhmar / Hurghada / Mons Porphyritis Track
archeological site, fort, interesting place, ancient ruins

Like Deir al Atrash and Deir al Badr, also this fort is related to the roman / bycantine quarries of Mons Porphyritis. It served obviously mainly as a base for controlling the area and not as a logistical base as it lacks stables and is much smaller and less fortified. Nevertheless the thick outer walls (built of the round rocks from the wadi around) were capable to shelter and defend the garrison and transport units against enimies, mainly marauding bedouin tribes. Though built in a wadi it could survive rare floods and is still worth a visit on the way to Mons Posphyritis.
