Egyptian Pyramids: Pyramid of Sneferu at Meidum (AKA Snofru AKA "False" AKA "The Collapsed")

Egypt / Bani Suwayf / El Wasta /
pyramid, tomb(s), open air museum, interesting place, ancient ruins

Ancient Egyptian pyramid of the Third Dynasty thought to have been started to honor Pharaoh Huni. A stepped pyramid was made originally ---like a series of boxes atop one-another, each smaller than the one below. Pharaoh Sneferu came to the throne after Huni and took over the site, ordering the structure redesigned as a "true" pyramid. The step-spaces were filled in and the whole was clad in smooth stone.

It is thought that during the ancient Egyptian New Kingdom, the pyramid's newer construction sheared off, leaving a ring of rubble and re-exposing the old stepped core. Even in its ruined state, the remnants are over 200 feet high.

Common site names: Pyramid of Sneferu, Pyramid of Meidum, Pyramid of Snofru, The False Pyramid, The Collapsed Pyramid, El Haram el Kaddab.

It was the World's Tallest Building from 2600BC/E to 2595 BC/E, later bested by the "Bent" Pyramid.
