  • This is often referred to as his "Breakaway House." To save money during construction Chaplin used his studio carpenters when they weren't busy. Big mistake! The carpenters were so used to putting together temporary sets they had forgotten how to build permanant structures. As soon as he moved in problems arose, paneling split, ornamental trim fell off the walls, doors came loose and the floors squeaked.
  • How much of this house is original? Generally the older houses did not have large expanses of flat roofs. As the houses became larger, some might argue overscaled for their architectural styles, municipally mandated height limits and practical limitations cause the sloped roofs to become mere mansards, hiding the flat roofs beyond. Flat roofs are not common to traditional / period architecture, rather a convention of modern construction technology.
  • I heard a rumor that all the keys were shaped like a C is this true. Susan
