Administrative center. Place where Sofiyivka park is situated. Population - 88000.
According to the results of archeological studies there were revealed remains of settlements of Upper Paleolith ,Tripillya Culture, Late Bronze Age, Culture of Chernyahivsk and age of Kievan Rus’…. There are burial mounds of Scythian time around Uman…. Mongol-Tatar hordes flooded all Uman area in the XII century and it came under the supremacy of Lithuanian-Rus state as well as the most of Ukrainian lands in the XIV century. But at the end of the XVI century it was colonized by Poland.
Currently there are several versions of origin of the name of Uman. Some historians say it is derived from the name of Kumano (enemy): Kumania – Kuman – Guman – Uman but others argue the name to the town was given by Umanka river (derived from Turkic language: Umar means a big river, Kuma – sandy river). There is a legend about tavern “U Mani” which is still being told over in Uman. Allegedly the very tavern was situated in the crossroad of ancient highways. There is also a version which bonds the name of the town with Trypillya Culture for “Uma” is one of the names of goddess Mahadeva or Parasvati. The exact date of the town foundation is unknown.
