Area One is part of Boeing-Rocketdyne’s Santa Susana Field Lab (SSFL) property, in the Simi Hills, above town of West Hills. It consists of 671 acres owned by Boeing / Rocketdyne and 42 acres owned by NASA, which acquired the LOX plant from the U.S. Air Force in 1973.

Area I contains administrative and laboratory facilities and was formerly used for rocket engine testing. Area One also includes the former Area One Thermal Treatment Facility and three rocket engine test areas: the Bowl, the Canyon, and the Advanced Propulsion Test Facility (APTF) areas.
