park, island, archaeological site, mound, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, interesting place

This secluded shell mound, constructed between 800-1400 AD, contains deposits from the Timucuan people. Oyster shells and refuse comprise the 50 foot mound. The mound's name is derived from its shape, which is reminiscent of a turtle. An elevated walkway, originating from a small parking lot, leads to the top of the mound. Two observation decks, offering broad views of the Mosquito Lagoon, are available. Several species of tropical plants occur on the mound. This site is the highest shell mound in the state of Florida.
