theatre, ballroom, 1969_construction, commercial building
3-story event center and parking garage originally completed in 1969 as a single-screen movie theater. Designed by Emery Roth & Sons, the theater was named in honor of the original Ziegfeld Theatre (1927–1966) which was built by the impresario Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. One of the last large-scale, single-screen movie palaces built in the United States, it closed in 2016, to be converted to a ballroom and event space called the Ziegfeld Ballroom, which opened in 2017.
The facades are clad in beige and black brick, and black stone. The main entrance is at the east end on 54th Street, with three sets of glass double-doors. To the left is a wide entrance to the underground parking garage located beneath the building; both of these areas are covered by a black metal marquee, and above is a blank wall of beige brick bordered in black stone. At the west end is a 1-story extension clad in black brick with a wide loading dock and service doors.
The north facade on 55th Street also has a beige brick expanse bordered in black stone. The ground floor has two garage entrances near the east end, with a glass door and metal service door at the west. The east facade, facing a pedestrian corridor between the theater and the large office building to the east, is clad in beige brick with vertical bands of black stone.
