Exposures of Sterling Quartzite and Latham Shale with faulted offsets. Good geology field trip site showing depositional relationships and brittle deformational structures.

The majority of the Marble Mountains (north of the highway) have been declared a Wilderness, and are no longer accessible. Fortunately, the govt still allows access to this small section.

  • In the Latham Shale outcrop at the south end of the Marble Mountains may be found abundant fossilized remains of Cambrian (515 million year old) of many trilobite species that swam in the warm seas that covered the earth at that time.
