This is the only above ground section of the IND Subway system built by New York City in the 1930's. It was originally designed to run in a tunnel under the Gowanus Canal, but this turned out to be impractical, and an elevated section was decided upon. Today much of the concrete facing is deteriorating, requiring the whole structure to be wrapped in black sheeting.
