It was established by the generosity of Amon G. Carter to house his collection of paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. The museum also houses landscape paintings from the 1830's to modern artists of the 20th century.
The museum was designed by world renowned architect Philip Johnson, he also designed the building's most recent expansion in 2001.
