The Tennessee State Capitol was built between 1846 and 1859 at a high point in the center of Nashville. The building is designed as a Greek Ionic temple, and, unlike the majority of state capitols, has a large cupola atop a pedestal, from which the US and Tennessee flags fly.

The Tennessee State Capitol also has the distinction of being the only State Capitol at which a former President, James K. Polk, is buried. Ironically, the building whose shadow he lies under was not started until 1846, while he was President. The grounds also feature statues of Andrew Jackson, Andrew Johnson, Sam Davis, and Senator Edward Ward Carmack.
