Conisborough Castle

United Kingdom / England / Conisbrough /

The most complete Norman castle keep in England, and the setting of Sir Walter Scott's novel "Ivanhoe".

Its curtain wall collapsed in an earthquake in the 14th century and was never repaired, rendering it indefensible; ironically, this preserved it from the ravages of the English Civil War three hundred years later.

The keep was partially restored with a roof and floors in the mid 1990s, and English Heritage charge for admission.
