Griffin House was built by Willard Griffin, the founder of Del Monte Packing, as part of his 97-acre estate in Los Altos Hills. It is one of the finest examples of Shingle style architecture designed by the San Jose firm of Wolfe and McKenzie. It was used as a residence until Foothill purchased the property in the late 1950’s. Since acquiring the house, the District has not used the building and has let the structure deteriorate through neglect. In the early 1990’s the District tried to tear down Griffin House and relented based upon strong community opposition. In the late 1990’s a new roof was put on the building with money donated by those same local residents who had fought against demolition.
