American Electric Power's Muskingum River Plant is located on a horseshoe bend of the Muskingum River a short distance north of the town of Beverly. It is operated by American Electric Power, which is an investor-owned electric utility that is, as of December 2008, the largest electricity generating utility company in the United States.
This plant was formerly served by the Muskingum Electric Railroad, which used automated General Electric E50C electric locomotives to bring coal from the captive coal mine 10 miles north of the plant. When the mine closed in 2002 the railway was retired and coal was then imported from other locations.
