Athens County was established in 1805, shortly after the founding of Ohio University in 1804.

The county and its seat were named for the famed Greek city, in recognition of its reputation as a center of learning in ancient times.

Athens County lies in the Allegheny Plateau region of Ohio, and it's extreme southeastern edge runs along the Ohio River. The landscape in this region includes forested hills and deep hollows.
