Gold Quarry (Mac, Tusc, Mike)

Carlin is the original pit but Gold Quarry, which opened in 1985 and has been supplemented by the Tusc satellite pit since 1994, is the largest.

This is where the American gold is coming from these days. They just keep finding more when no one thinks there's any left. The mine is mainly located along the Carlin Trend. No one is quite sure why the gold is concentrated in this area, it's still a matter of debate.

Gold Quarry, which opened in 1985, is currently Newmont’s largest open pit on the Carlin Trend – dubbed by many as the “most prolific goldfield in the Western hemisphere.” When it first began, mining at the site was originally expected to last six years. However, many subsequent discoveries and expansions have allowed it to continue operating.

Located 7 miles (11.3 kilometers) north of Carlin, Nevada, Gold Quarry is 90.1 percent owned by Newmont Mining Corporation.
