Carr Memorial Chapel of St. Savior (Chicago, Illinois)

USA / Illinois / Chicago / Chicago, Illinois / East 32nd Street, 65
church, chapel, International Style (architecture) (Bauhaus), Modern (architecture)

The chapel is unique Mies van der Rohe building because it is his only religious building. Also, it is his only load-baring brick wall building on the campus. The rest are steel frame construction with a brick and glass enclosure. It is now undergoing restoration like many of Mies's other buildings on campus. As great, and timeless (or should I say, of the time) his buildings are, they have many flaws due to the construction technology. For example many of the steel window frames have rusted and expanded. The quality of the space in the building, the artful techniques of construction, and the idea of material truth, ultimately make all of Mies's buildings brilliant examples of modern architecture.
