fountain, interesting place
This large fountain springs into action about once an hour. It was originally developed when Battersea Park hosted the Festival of Britain pleasure gardens in 1951, and was at the time far larger than it is now. They declined for many years, and eventually stopped working altogether, until Wandsworth Council restored them in 2000 (helped by a grant from the National Lottery). The 1950s styling, with bold blue and orange colours, is still evident. A small tea shop has recently been added in the same style next door.
The festival was accompanied by an exhibition of sculptures organised by the Arts Council, also in the park, which included sculpture by Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Single Form, by Barbara Hepworth, is currently located to the south of the main lake.
