City with a population of 9,163 at the 2010 census. The town was laid out 1729 and named for the Prince George Parish which was located in the area, named for the prince who would become George II. County seat of Georgetown County.

The third oldest city in South Carolina, following Charleston and Beaufort, Georgetown became an official port of entry in 1732. Prior to this, all foreign exports and imports had to pass through Charleston. Duties and the added freight had to be paid there. With the designation of Georgetown as a port of entry, the area's merchants and planters could deal directly with all ports, bypassing Charleston.Today, Georgetown is the second largest seaport in South Carolina, handling over 960,000 tons of materials a year.
